The Farmer’s Wife

The Broken Road Farm

Four years ago this month, my husband and I moved to The Broken Road Farm. At first glance I must confess, the land was a mess. And I knew I had no experience on where to begin. And I didn’t know the first thing about being a farmer’s wife. (I’m still finding my way!)

But thank God for Tim. He knew which direction to take, and all I had to do was follow. There have been some wonderful moments, sad moments, and very scary moments! Yes everyday on the farm has been like being on the show Fear Factor for me. Just walking from the porch to my truck with grasshoppers of every size flying at me is enough to send someone over the edge. (And yes by someone I mean me!)

But that having been said, I do it, I walk through them! I am not going to tell you that I don’t scream a little or that I never run.

The garden was a wonderful experience this year. Canning and making Jelly from the abundance of grape, plum, and blackberries on the land. The animals have been a lot of work, but so much joy and love. Our cats, dogs, and our beloved Goats are never ending adventures.

I never thought I would be living on a farm with the love of my life, But I am! I am so looking forward to many more years to come! But a little secret between friends, I say a prayer every night for there to be a little less grasshoppers! Oh, and did I mention the snakes!

When You Know You Are A Farmer’s Wife!

I was so excited; Tim and I were going on a date day! Lunch and maybe some antique shopping. I was getting dressed up, mind you I love to wear jeans and denim shirts, no makeup and my hair pulled up. But I am still a women and I wanted to wear my new dress and heels.

I had just got ready, sprayed some Obsession on when Tim came through the door and told me one of the goats were sick. Gigi who happens to be my favorite.

I slung off my heels put on my rubber boots grabbed my medical bag and out the door we went to the goat pen. I rushed to Gigi to see how she was, I hiked up my new beautiful dress, and squatted in mud and other things we won’t mention and gave her a shot and some love. And in return she gave me a big sneeze right in my face and then proceeded to wipe her nose on my dress.

When we came back up to the house, there I stood my hair windblown, clothes filthy. I went in washed my hands and face, changed into jeans and a shirt. (No it wasn’t denim at least!) I suddenly heard the vacuum cleaner go on. Well, I walk into the kitchen to find my wonderful husband vacuuming out the pockets of my coat, when I asked why he simply smiled and said you have hay in your pockets. I just smiled back at him, that’s when I knew it……….I am a farmer’s wife.
